The vertical lines through the brains in the far left column indicate where activity was being recorded. The columns labeled “Perception” and “Imagery” indicate responses in the perception and imagery conditions.

(a) Responses of areas in the frontal lobe. Perception and imagery cause the same activation.

(b) Responses further back in the brain. Activation is the same in this area as well.

(c) Responses from the back of the brain, including the primary visual area. There is much more activation in this area in the perception condition.
