ADHD: Don’t call me stupid, stupid!

“It’s harder for these kids to make friends because they don’t know the right kind of social etiquette” … What a load of BS … Here’s why …

Almost everyday I read something on the Internet about ADHD which enrages me … The ignorance and stigmatization is rampant, even (or especially?) among those who were supposed to know better – child psychologists …

Today I came across an article with the headline …

The article is almost a verbatim quotation from the DSM-5 manual on ADHD, and it simply reiterates the diagnostic criterias for a clinical diagnoses of ADHD, but besides that, the author sprinkles the odd misnomer here and there, like …

“Group based counseling, such as social skills groups …” – This implies that a person with ADHD is less knowledgeable than everyone else, at the same age and intellect, right?

WRONG! “put your child in therapy …” –

WHY!? So that you can make money on explaining children why THEY are at the root of all of their problems?

Children with ADHD have been “corrected” 20,000 times more, at age 12, than their peers – imagine what that will do to the child’s self-esteem and confidence!?

I CANNOT CHANGE – BUT YOU CAN!

And still you believe, that “if the child only were capable of UNDERSTANDING what to do, to BE right …” – NO – misunderstood my dear Irina …

Inclusion is NOT about ME changing my behavior to suit your expectations, alright!?

Inclusion means, that you (and the rest of society) will show understanding and compassion for me, WHEN my behaviors are in conflict with societal norms and “etiquette” – STOP victim blaiming and START understanding WHY my behavior is as it is!

My ADHD is by no means any excuse for my behaviors, but it is, nonetheless,
a pretty fucking good explanation for it!

ADHD is NOT a knowledge disorder!

My good friend and (unofficial) mentor, Dr. Russell A. Barkley, PhD., who have researched ADHD for more than 40 years, as well as being the author of the theory of ADHD from 1997 which lays at the foundation of both the DSM and ICD empirical evidence for ADHD, 20 books on the topic and who have published more than 200+ scientifically, peer-reviewed studies, states:

Dr. Russell A. Barkley, PhD.

Shine, Dadgummit, shine!!!!

Let me illustrate how ignorant the statement from the child psychologist really is …

“Imagine a lamp. This lamp looks like any other lamp. It has a perfectly working light bulb, and an electric cord. Can we agree, that no matter how many times you:

  • Show the lamp how all the other lamps can shine …
  • Berate the lamp for not shining like all the other lamps do …
  • Explain in painstakingly obvious details HOW a lamp should shine…
  • Try to bribe the lamp to start shining…

“The lamp will NOT shine … until you plug in the cord and hit the switch, right?”

ADHD is the Diabetes of the Brain!

The only two things that can “plug the cord in and hit the switch” are; TIME and MEDICATION!

With time the maturational delay catches up (around age 30, compared to 18-22 for neurotypicals) and normal Inhibitory Control is – synaptically – established.

What ADHD medication does, is create a temporary – synaptic connection – between the parts of the brain which is delayed, and thereby temporarily connect the Inhibitory Control to the Motor Control, which then in turns manages all verbal and nonverbal activity … that is why medication treats both behaviors, emotions and cognitions at once!

“Just like a person with Diabetes needs their insuline to manage their metabolism, people with ADHD needs medication to manage their behaviorism!”

Peter ‘ADDspeaker’ Vang (2022)

ADHD is NOT a disorder of (in)attention, okay! ADHD is a disorder of INHIBITION!

ADHD is NOT a mental disorder which affect a persons intellect, ability to learn or understand knowledge!

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, which due to a maturational delay in the growth of specific areas of the brain, due to genetic dispositions, develops at an around 30-40% slower pace, than that which is expected according to the persons age.

What this means, is that a child aged 10 years chronologically, has the developmental capacities on Inhibitory Control, which matches that which could be expected of a child aged 7, chronologically!

So when Irina and all the other “well-wishing ignorants” – assumes – that the reason that the 10-year old is not PERFORMING as is to be expected of a child at that age, she and the others – assumes – that this must be due to the child lacking the KNOWLEDGE of how to do stuff … But that is pure ignorance, and have been known to be so, for at least the past 10 years!

A child (or adult for that sake) with ADHD do NOT have a diminished capacity to learn! But they have a diminished capacity to DO that which they have learned BEFORE their intrinsic, genetic disposition of the developmental delay, have already caused them to ACT, without proper FORESIGHT …

I know as much (and probably a whole lot more …) about many areas of my interest, as any other nerd with interest in the same subject does!

What I cannot do, which a person without ADHD can, is STOP telling people all I know, even when I perceive & understand as well as can sense, that their focus is wandering due to “information overload”.

I’m not STUPID, stupid … I’m DISINHIBITED … and that is NOT my choice to be so … but it is a fact of my life, and that I have to live and deal with – for the rest of my life, OK!?

So, Irina, and all you “well-wishing ignorants” outthere – would you please educate yourself and try to change your biases and misconceptions about ADHD – especially before you share your expertise in the media? Thanks alot – you’re precious …
